Em. Lasker was the first of the great chess players to realize the importance of studying the personality of opponents in chess.

Em. Lasker repeatedly pointed out that "people fight on chessboards, not wooden pieces".
Further, the intermediate operation of calculation - a move in the mind - involves fixing the position resulting from the move with the visual imagination.
